I'm sure Coach Luther mentioned that we were at the boy's camp yesterday, helping hand out the "Bobby Warns Spirit Award".....it was so uplifting to see all the talented guys and girls shooting around. The spirit that was there yesterday was wonderful to experience. Both of you must be very special young ladies--and my family just wants to say thank you for taking the time to write. USMC Recruit Name: Jennie Location: St. Louis, MO Comments: Dear Mr. and Mrs. Warns - I am sure that you don't remember me, but I graduated from St. Joe's and Catholic Memorial with Bobby. We actually went to TWIRP together out freshmen year. I now live in St. Louis and my parents forwarded me the picture of your granddaughter that was in the paper. How she looks like Bobby! Amazing. I was recently flipping through old pictures and there was one of 8th grade graduation where Bobby and I are standing next to each other because we were in the "short front row." I remember he kidding saying that we were in the front because we were the best looking. Anyway, Bobby became tall, and I am still in the "short row." I thought you would like that picture, so please let me know if it would be alright to send it. I think I have one from TWIRP too. There isn't much that I can say that hasn't already been said, except that Bobby was and still is very much loved. Always loved, never forgotten. Jennie Roberts P.S. - The pictures are beautiful! Name: Lance Corporal Matthew Hutchison Location: Iraq Comments: To the Warns Family, Currently I am serving in Iraq with 2nd Marine Division RCT-8. My job is a Combat Photographer and videographer. I was introduced to the website and video of your son and husband shortly before leaving. It truly brought tears to my eyes. The video has touched my heart and soul. It brought to a new found understanding for my deployment. My only wish and will is to do my job to bring our sons, daughters, husbands, and wives home. As you know your son is guarding the gates of heaven. His unselfish act truly has given me the courage and strength to get up every day to do my job as a Marine. I myself am expecting a healthy baby come September, but will not be able to see him be born. I pray and hope for my safe return to be able to watch him grow and become a handsome young man. My prayers and thoughts are truly with Cpl Warns each and every day. My blessing and prayers go out to you. Marines not only take care of each other, but their families as well. It is our tradition. It is our honor. Thank you for all that you have given to all of us. Name: Brady Stephenson Location: Helotes, TX Comments: Thank you for the poignant reminder that when we hear on the news that men of our armed forces were killed in the war on terror that they are not just nameless members of the military but friends, husbands, sons, and fathers. They are men who lived and loved and cared enough to lay down their lives for the safety of our nation and for the future of people in foreign nations who may never know their names but who will none-the-less be blessed by their sacrifice. I shed tears at the end of the video knowing that I would not meet Bobby in this life and have the opportunity to thank him for his commitment to duty, his honor, and his sacrifice. I asked in silent prayer that God would, indeed, hold Bobby in the palm of His hand and rain down His love and grace upon him until we who are left behind to carry on are able to join him and thank him personally. Please share my thanks with his parents for raising such a fine man as their son. Name: Crissy Frickson Location: South Bend, Indiana Comments: Thank you, I'm not sure whatelse to say. His dad, saluting his own son (so poignantly captured on this video) will be on my mind and close to my own heart this Sunday. Name: Carole Bolatto Location: Marseilles, Illinois Comments: I have saved your site and look at it every now and then. We need to remember what families go through because of your sons desire to protect us all. Today I looked at it and saw the beautiful little girl that proudly has his name. Also today in my town of Marseilles they put your sons name on the Freedom Wall. This is a monument to honor anyone killed in the conflict over there. There were lots of names added to the wall today just in time for a freedom run that is this Saturday. All the proceeds from the day go to aid in adding more names to the wall. I really hate to see more names added because I know for each name there is a family just like yours that has lost a loved one. The site of the wall is very pretty along the river and very peaceful. I will always look for your sons name each time I visit the wall. We don't know each other but I feel a part of your sorrow because of the beautiful video that you shared will all of us. Dear Bobby, Even though you have fallen on the battlefield last November, we can still feel the presence of you through your new baby daughter, Payton. The Day of your Funeral i felt sad, angry, and even joy at the same time. Sad, that you had fallen with never the chance to marry Erin. Angry, at the war and the president for keeping our troops over in Iraq, Bobby, i was even mad at god himself for allowing you to pass. But afterwards, I felt a great joy from you strengthining your religion over in Iraq, joy that your new baby daughter would be healthy and in good care, and finally that you would watch over all of us from heaven and protect us from the Evils of Al-Queida. For your heroism,Honor, and valor I thank you... Charlie Stromwall ---------- Charlie, Your letter to Bobby has made my cry, but in a good way. Thank you so much for writing it. The clip is profoundly moving and brings to mind all the sacrifices, past and present, that not only the soldiers who seek to secure our freedom make, but the sacrifices made by thier loved ones who remain at home and await their safe return. Were my financial situation different I would gladly contribute to the family coffers as we all know how difficult and costly it can be to raise a child. Sadly, I do not have the funds at this time. Comments: Robert was with our platoon under the bridge, "An Overpass Too Far". He and his team were an invaluable members of our Platoon. A rifle platoon is only a life support system for their weapons attachments and Robert and his team were worth their weight in gold. They patrolled a stretch of road about, 7 miles long, providing machine gun support for the squad with them. They screened the road for road side bombs, conducted raids, assisted with convoy security and counter ambush patrols. Robert and his team went out on patrol without complaint.Going out on almost every patrol, as we needed machine gunners in the trucks. Their efforts saved lives and hurt our enemies. Our platoon was very grateful to have Robert and his team with us. The video you have produced is wonderful. Freedom is the legacy he leaves to his baby girl. The world she will grow up in will not treat her like a slave, she will have the opportunity to be what she determines herself to be, worshipping the way she desires, free to work where she wishes, and to associate with whom she wants to. She can vote and even be president of the nation of her birth. My children have inherited the same legacy thanks to Robert and those like him. I shall never forget Robert nor any of those who died in our defense. My heart goes out to your family and to all those who have lost loved ones. Semper Fi. To know that Bobby's work in Iraq was appreciated not only by the people living there but also by his brothers in arms gives us great comfort. God bless you for your sacrifice for our way of life, Bridget Warns Bobby's very proud mom -------- Brian, Thank you for sending this email and shedding some light on the effort Bobby put forth. Bob didn't give us much information on his duties, keeping that information secure, I guess, so we wouldn't worry. I figured that he was "busy" as he did send me an email that only stated that, "he had a lot to tell me about", when he got back. I have said that in reality, we are all in this existence for a relatively short time, and what we do with our lives is our legacy and on what we will be judged. What you Brian, Bobby, the Marines and all our fighting forces have accomplished and will accomplish is a worthy achievement for any citizen, patriot and man, in my opinion. Vainly the prophets of Baal would rend it, Vainly his worshippers pray for its fall; Thousands have died for it, millions defend it, Emblem of justice and mercy to all; Justice that reddens the sky with her terrors, Mercy that comes with her white-handed train, Soothing all passions, redeeming all errors, Sheathing the sabre and breaking the chain. Borne on the deluge of all usurpations, Drifted our Ark o'er the desolate seas, Bearing the rainbow of hope to the nations, Torn from the storm-cloud and flung to the breeze! "He stands barefoot in the snow, starved from lack of food, wounded from months of battle and emotionally scarred for the eternity away from his family surrounded by nothing but death and carnage of war. He stands though, with fire in his eyes and victory on his breath. He looks at us now in anger and disgust and tells us this. … "I gave you a birthright of freedom born in the Constitution and now your children graduate too illiterate to read it. I fought in the snow barefoot to give you the freedom to vote and you stay at home because it rains. I left my family destitute to give you the freedom of speech, and you remain silent on critical issues, because it might be bad for business. I orphaned my children to give you a government to serve you and it has stolen democracy from the people. "It's the soldier, not the poet, who gives you the freedom of speech. "It's the soldier, not the campus organizer, who allows you to demonstrate. "It's the soldier, who salutes the flag, serves the flag, whose coffin is draped with the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag! "Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Name: Keith Sefton Location: Washington, DC Comments: To the Warns Family: As I watched this video on Memorial Day, the thought of your loss and the honor you provided your loved one through this media was overhwelming. I have no doubt that when the next chapter is finally recorded in the hisotry of our Nation, your son and those who served with him will be known as the "Next Greatest Generation." They did not come from the poverty of the 30s into WWII, but from the plenty of the 70s, 80s and 90s, from parents like us, who tried (and often did) give them much more than they could have ever dreamed of -- yet they still stood prepared to sacrifice all in the name of service to their country. I, too, was a Marine -- for 31 years -- and while I never once thought of the impact such a career choice had on members of my family I do now -- since both my daughters are married to Marines, both of whom have now twice been to Iraq and Afghanistan. The long nights, the random thoughts of their welfare are now common to me as well. Their safe journey home was made possible by the sacrifices of those like Bobby, and we all said a prayer yesterday for those who did not return in the traditional sense. But seeing this, it's clear Bobby's return was all that circumstances permitted, yet something of strength...honor, courage and commitment were all present at his service -- as was sacrifice. May you be comforted in the knowledge that all over America, others like me join in your hope that the future will always be brighter with those like Bobby around. Sincerely, Keith T. Ever since hearing about the loss of one of Wisconsins' own, I have felt a connection though. I came across the video of Bobbys services quite a few months back. I come and view it often, and read the thoughtful messages people leave. I left one of my own back in January of February. My friend Jim who is a WWII Veteran and myself were able to attend services this morning, and visit Bobbys grave site. I had ordered memorial bracelets for Jim and I to wear and we did with pride. When I ordered them, I ordered 2 extra thinking I would possibly be able to give them to friends or family of Bobby should we happen to come across them at the services. Alas we did not. I put them next to the flowers on his grave with a card in hopes that someone will get them to Erin and Payton, or Bob and Bridget. Please know that this Memorial Day had more significance than ever before for me. I wish you all well, and please know that your Bobby will never be forgotten, and I will wear his name proudly on my wrist every Memorial Day. Name: Bob Location: Gainesville, Ga - Comments: When God created a United States Marine - When God created a United States Marine, it was into the sixth day of overtime. An angel appeared and said, "You're having a lot of trouble with this one. What's wrong with the standard model?" And the Lord replied, "Have you seen the spec's on this order? It has to be able to think independently, yet be able to take orders; have the qualities of both a military mind and a compassionate heart; be a leader of junior Marines and learn from seniors; run on black coffee; handle critical ops without a Military Procedure Manual; be able to manage a difficult subordinate, an irate supervisor and a demanding OIC; have the patience of a saint and six pairs of hands, not to mention the strength of three its size." The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands - no way!" And the Lord answered, "Don't worry, we'll make other Marines to help. Besides, it's not the hands which are causing the problem. It's the heart. It must swell with pride when other Marines do well, sustain the incredible hardship of combat, beat on soundly when it's too tired to do so, and be strong enough to continue to carry on when he's given all he's had." "Lord," said the angel touching the Lord's sleeve gently, "Come to bed!" "I can't," said the Lord. "I'm so close to creating something unique. Already I have one who can complete a 26-mile forced march with full pack, handle a 9mm and an M16 with astounding accuracy, conduct land navigation in the dark, and operate field communications." The angel circled the model of the Marine very slowly. "It's too serious," she sighed. "But tough," said the Lord excitedly, "You cannot imagine what this Marine can do or endure." "Can it feel?" asked the angel. "Can it feel!" replied the Lord. "It loves the Corps and country like no other!" Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the Marine's cheek. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you you're trying to put too much into this model." "That's not a leak," said the Lord. "That's a tear." "What's it for?" asked the angel. "It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, frustration, pain, loneliness and pride." "You're a genius!" exclaimed the angel. The Lord looked at her somberly and replied, "I didn't put it there." Name: John Simpson Location: Tennessee Comments: I viewed your video today and was deeply moved! My heart aches for all of you. As Abraham Lincoln said at Gettysburg, "they paid the full measure" for our freedom. I am humbled that your son would sacrifice as he has for me and mine. I have two small daughters, and they are safer today because of Bobby and others like him, and I am forever in your debt for that. I pray that the Lord will wrap you all in His loving arms and keep you close all the days of your lives. Name: Dan McLaughlin Location: Queens, NY Comments: A very moving tribute. We are all in Corporal Warns' debt. May God's light shine upon him. Name: Mary Jo Welch Location: Brandon, Manitoba CANADA Comments: I grew up in Luverne, Minnesota. My Grandma, here in Brandon raised me for the first year of my life when my mother was ill and my Dad had to work and couldn't look after three tiny kids. I came back to Canada and stayed with Grandma after high school and years later I am still here. We have lots of boys that are dual-citizens and they all join the MARINES. I hope some of them met Bob and got to see some one with life just beginning to blossom. I am sending the lyrics to: SAND AND WATER a song written by Beth Nielson Chapmam It is off an album she wrote when her husband, Ernest died leaving her a small child to raise. I am sorry, I am not at home to give you the name of the album, but the lyrics to her songs are on the internet. When my "heart Mom" died after being ill for 5 days, this album, comforted me greatly. I wish I could send it to you. SAND AND WATER All alone I didn't like the feeling All alone I sate and cried All alone I had to find some meaning In the center of the pain I felt inside All alone I came into this world All alone I will someday die Solid stone is just sand and water, baby Sand and water, and a million years gone by I will see you in the light of a thousand suns I will hear you in the sound of the waves I will know you when I come, as we all will come Through the doors beyond the grave All alone I heal this heart of sorrow All alone I raise this child Flesh and bone, she's just Bursting towards tomorrow And her laughter fills my world and wears your smile I will see you in the light of a thousand suns I will hear you in the sound of the waves I will know you when I come, as we all will come Through the doors beyond the grave All alone I came into this world All alone I will someday die Solid stone is just sand and water, baby Sand and water and a million years gone by I know that you Bobby has a very strong and supportive family, but in every one's heart, the pain is alone. I hope that as Beth says on her album, "you never get over it, you go through to the other side." I encourage you to check out her site for the lyrics to the song: "SAY GOODNIGHT NOT GOODBYE" Oh, how I wish the only uniform to be on your doorstep had been your son and husband. I would like to say I am sorry for your loss, and just having viewed the video of your son is very touching. Having seen your video of Corporal Robert P. Warns II made me choke up like I never had cried before. I mean I felt pain for someone whom I have never met, for someone I have never known, for someone I can respect and finally for someone I consider a brother of mine. Although not by blood, he will always be a Marine brother just like many before him, and, sadly, many after him but I do not wish to dwell in this sadness for a stranger who I would have loved to share a beer with, a talk or even a salute since I know one day I will meet him myself and I will introduce myself to him as I will to all my fallen comrades. I have passed this on to many other people to share and it is not to feel pity for someone they do not know but to show them what it takes to be a man, to be a soldier and most of all to be a Marine. I thank God for that fact. But I also never forget in those prayers to thank God for the sacrifice others have made in our stead. I know my family never forgets. Thank God again we live in a country where even our younger understand the true price Freedom is worth, and are willing to fight to preserve it for us all. Freedom is worth fighting for. Thank you Robert Warns for what you have paid for me. Sincerely, L Trone Marion, IL Name: Angie Wenzel Location: Sussex, WI Comments: Dear Warns Family~ I don't know if you remember me at all, but I played AAU basketball with Katie for a couple years. We were on the Oconomowoc Lakers team and travelled all over the place. I am shocked and my heart is broken for you. I didn't put two and two together until today when I read the article in the paper and saw Bobby's picture. I didn't know it was Katie's little brother until today. I just can't believe it. I'll share one story that I remember from a tourney up at UW-Stout. Tyler Danen and Bobby always hung out together during these tourney's and mostly were the only boys dragged along to these events. I'll never forget this one time we were playing in the lower gym and it was hot. Bobby and Tyler always found things to do and had been swimming that day. They had made it to our game just in time to watch. If you remember, you always had to pay to get in to the games, so the boys got someone to press their "paid" mark onto their hand's so that they could get in free! It was the funniest thing and we all got a kick out of it. They were always trying to be funny and keep themselves... and the rest of us entertained. I know you must miss him terribly... I can't even imagine... but know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. If there is ANYTHING I can do for you, please let me know. Tell Katie that I say hi and, if she wants, she should email me and we could get ice cream or something. I see she's married now... congrats! Also, congrats on you new granddaughter... she's beautiful! It was evident right away that you would be a wonderful mom! I remember the day you found out that your dear Bobby was gone, no longer to be with you here on earth. What a sad day and a horrible thing to have happen to anyone, especially a young women who has just found out she is expecting their first child. I watched you grieve, grow, hold your head up high and take care of yourself and your baby. You blossomed into a beautiful pregnant women, a little sick at times, but kept smiling and laughing in spite of it all! I remember the saltines and water in the morning, only to be sick again, yet you rarely complained, came in to work, did your best, and kept going. I remember you being so sick at night that you slept on the bathroom floor, and still got up in the morning and came to work, if only for a few hours. You honored your committment, not wanting to let us down at work, thinking of others instead of yourself. I hope you realize how special you are, how much your strength teaches those around you, how amazing these 9 months have been and what a wonderful mom you are going to be! And now Payton is finally here, healthy and beautiful. Your daughter is so blessed to have you. She will learn so much from her beautiful and strong mom. God bless you and Payton on your new journey.
