The video was wonderful and touching and I extend my deepest sympathies to all of your family in your time of loss. Name: A. James Location: Columbus, OH Comments: The word 'hero' today is tossed around like one says hello. The 'hero' of the game. The guy who climbed a tree to rescue a cat. No! That is a special word and should never be abused. It should only be used for special people who contribute honesty and bravery towards mankind. Webster's dictionary definition of a hero is: a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds. A man who is regarded as having heroic qualities. It should also say, see the life and death of U.S. Marine Cpl. Robert Warns II. Your sons loss, thou very tragic, will save the lives of so many other faceless people throughout the free world. You can be proud of Robert Warns II. As he was proud to call himself a United States Marine. A. James USAF 1968-72 CPD 1972-97 Name: Marc Schantz Location: Duluth, Ga Comments: We take for granted the very freedom provided to us by men and women who have given their life in it's defense. It is moments like these, people like Mr.Warns that open our eyes, if but for a brief moment. Our country will find a way to politize the events, and sacrifices, made in Iraq. I am eternal grateful to Mr. Warns, and others, who when their country called, they honored their commitment to serve our great nation. May my sons have the same courage! Name: Joshua Larson Location: Buffalo, NY Comments: I found the highlight video by happenstance on Sean Hannity's messageboards - the word of this site is spreading rapidly! I just wanted to say to you that I am sorry for your tragic loss. Cpl. Warns seemed like an exemplary young man, a model Marine and a hero in the eyes of the people who love him. Thank God that we have such excellent men and women in our Marine Corps... we are truly blessed. On behalf of a very grateful fellow citizen... thank you for contributing your son to our Corps and God Bless. Please know that his loss is also felt by all Marines, past, present & future, as the loss of a brother to any family. Cpl. Warns will always be remembered and honored for his service and sacrifice by all his brother Marines. Although I know your loss is painful and great, please never forget to be very proud of your Marine, for he is one of the true heros of The Marine Corps. The Men who don't come home are all genuine heros, and should always be thought of as such. I came home from Vietnam twice, many of my fellow Marines didn't, and they will live forever in my heart and mind, as will Cpl. I could not speak for several minutes after viewing it. The only thing more moving than the video has been the comments posted by the Marine Corps community on your web site. I've been a Marine for 25 years, was in Iraq for the invasion and will be going back soon. I am very moved by the site and the video. They are fitting tributes to you son. I believe that President Regan said it best when describing Marines: "Some people spend entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem." Bobby made a difference. He was a hero; not like these sports figures or celebrities to whom that title is sometimes mistakenly applied, but a REAL American HERO. He paid the ultimate sacrifice for a greater good that we often times cannot always see, thus making it frustrating and catastrophic even to justify in our minds; to fathom the reasons behind one good man's sacrifice for an instance that may not better ourselves personally. I too often contemplate whether or not its worth the anguish to be bestowed upon my family should I perish in battle. But one thing I do know is that I am proud to serve my country-to protect people like my family and the family of Cpl Warns. To be willing to die so that others like them may live is a burden only to be carried by a warrior, and while being a warrior, there is nothing more glorious than dying with honor--in battle. Cpl Warns is therefore a warrior through and through who should not be forgotten anytime soon. His chivalry and dedication to one's country should be memorialized not just in stone, but in dedication returned as everyone does their best to ensure his baby's future is a meaningful one. A life is a priceless commodity which cannot be returned. We as a country owe Cpl Warns, and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in battle. My God rest his soul and henceforth bless the life in which he has created. I thank the family of Cpl Warns for footage of a great man--giving me a template by which to pattern myself as a warrior. In closing, once again I extend my sincerest apologies and wish his family the very best. Name: Roger Winegardner Location: Mifflinburg, PA Comments: I cried. I was a Capt. in the U.S. Army Special Forces and even though I am not a Marine we are all still brothers and sister because we wear a military uniform. I salute Bobby and all like him. The generation that came before me handed the guardianship of our country off to us - I and my brothers did the best we could from Vietnam to 9-11. Our time was nearing it's conclusion and it was befitting that we turn over the guardianship to the next generation. It is this humble soldier's opinion that we could NOT have handed it over to so great a group as that which Bobby represented. Thank you (Bobby's family)for your sacrifice and I grieve your loss - but please remember this - Bobby was a loss to ALL of us - to ALL Americans that believe in this great country and know that freedom is NOT free. My father told me something that I feel led to share with you: "Son, freedom has a taste the likes of which those that have never fought for it or sacrificed for it will ever know. He believes, as your son did, that it is best that we stop the terriost's in their own country and not ours. I remember telling my son that I would stand beside him and fight the terrorists here in America, I just didn't want him to go to Iraq. He calmly reminded me that I could not always be at the school where my grandson goes, that I could not always be at the home of my other son to protect him and his wife from terrorists, and that I could not be there everyday for my mother who lives two and ahalf hours away. I realized that I could not and so he is where he knows he needs to be to protect all the ones I love from those who want to kill us. After viewing the video, I know your son was very much loved. It is truly a beautiful, thoughtful, and fitting memorial for one as humble as our Marine. I only know of his heroism, your loss, through the family that Bobby and I, all Marines, share, the Marine network. I hold Bobby up as a personal hero, one of the many that through the years of our existence as a Corps, has made the ultimate sacrifice for our, and others, freedom. I never met your son, your husband, Payton’s daddy, but I do know so many other fine young men and women that are just like him. The loss of one of us impacts and saddens us all. As a Marine, I share Bobby’s love of the Corps, the love of country, the love of our families and the dedication to protect all. Luke Walta Location: Eau Claire WI Comments: I was deeply saddened and upset by the news of Cpl Warns death. I can't claim that I was a close personal friend of Roberts, however I did know him and served with him in Golf Co. until I checked out of the unit in July of 2003. I do remember talking and joking with Cpl Warns many times. He was a Marine you always enjoyed talking to. His positive attitude and excellent sence of humor were the first thing that struck you about his personality. The clearest memory I have of Cpl Warns was the first time he came to the unit. At the time I was the Plt Sgt for HQ Plt. All new joins were assigned to my plt for the initial formation of the weekend and were later assigned to there own platoon. Usually the new joins were a quiet and almost frieghtened group. Robert, however, was excited and quick with a joke. I knew he'd adjust well and become what you could call a key member of the company. His attitude and personality fit our unit more perfectly than I can express. The loss of this outstanding Marine causes a temporary sinking in my heart. Then I realize the true sadness would have been if he had never crossed my path or become a part of Golf Co. His presence and contribution to Golf Co. and the Marine Corps in general cannot be measured. In that respect, I know a small part of the grief you must feel because I'm sure he had an even greater affect in the lives of his family and friends. My nephew is in the Marines and as such, I've met many young Marines. Many of which, have become close friends. I pray daily for God's presence in their young lives. One cannot put into words the pride and love that I feel for them. There is no way to "repay" them for the sacrifices they make each and every day. Honor, pride and respect...they have earned it all. Though I never met Bobby, I can see by that charming smile that he was a great person. I'm hopeful that his precious little girl will have that same smile, that same laugh, the same love and devotion that her daddy had. I pray that she grows up being so very proud of the daddy she never got to meet. I pray that as Americans we leave the world a safer place for her to grow up in. Name: MGySgt John A. Northcott, Jr. (USMC Ret) Location: Brandy Station, Virginia Comments: Being a Marine is the most honorable profession I can think of, not just because I did it for 30+ years, but because men like your Bobby and my son, John III, have followed in the footsteps of those who have come before them. Each Marine carries on a tradition that has been a "National Treasure" of the American people for over 229 years. Being a Marine is a very special honor. Just anyone can't be a Marine, only those who are chosen, only those who have a calling, only those who have the desire. I pray everyday for the safe return from Iraq of my own son and my heart breaks each time I hear that another family's young Marine has been wounded or has given the ultimate sacrfice. In the Bible, John 15:12 teaches us, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Through the array of emotions and pain your family has endured, please take comfort in knowing Bobby is with our Lord and savior and no longer has pain or suffering. As much as you may miss him, he is in a much better place than we. You will see him again one day, but until then remember to place all your trials and testings in the Lord's hands. Bobby is a United States Marine. He was one in life, and he will always be one even in death. He did what Marines do without question or reservation and you should always feel comfort in that. I know he was proud to hold the title United States Marine, we all are. It's a pride embeded into our souls. It's a pride that burns deep inside each Marine and even death itself can never extinquish. Unless you are a Marine, it is impossible to explain. The closest anyone could ever come, is being the FAMILY of a Marine for they too know this "pride." From an old Marine and his family, please accept our deepest sympathies. Name: Ryan Empey Location: Dallas, Texas Comments: I was very touched by the video. As a former Marine, a parent of 3 young men and 2 young women and a grandfather of 6 grandchildren (one recently deceased), I too feel your pain. I have lost fellow Marines while serving in hostile areas. But, the loss of a son is particularly difficult. I truly pray, that with time, the pain will ease. The loss will always be with you while you are in this earthly life, but it will be but a twinkling of an eye when you will be reunited and will find him perfect and in good hands. Just endure until that great reunion and keep your faith that he is in a better place. The Lord will bless you in your loss. With warmest regards and prayers, H. Ryan Empey Name: LT Bryan Kinyoun, USN Location: NAS Lemoore, CA Comments: To the Family and Friends of CPL Warms, I wanted to take a brief moment to tell you all how very proud and honored I am to serve with men and women like Robert. Like thousands before him, Robert made the ultimate sacrifice and that is a sacrifice that I wish on no family. Robert is an angel now and it warms me to know that he served the USMC not because he had to do it, but because he wanted to do it. His dedication, motivation, loyalty and love for country is what mends the fabric that makes America. From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of the United Sates Navy and Strike Fighter Squadron 125 I thank you for Robert’s sacrifice and love for our United States of America. Very Respectfully, LT Bryan Kinyoun, USN Name: SSgt Jeff Burch Location: Phoenix, AZ Comments: After seen the video of Bobby, I felt I knew him. I want to send my condolence to your family. Jeff Burch SSgt USAF Name: Mary and Joe Hull Location: Carlsbad, CA Comments: Dear Warns Family, I had the privelege of meeting Bobby while he was stationed at Camp Pendleton. He came to my house with his friend Cpl. Jon Hall. (Cpl. Hall is my college roommates nephew.) They were on their way to spend the day at the beach. Bobby had bought a little blow up raft to use in the water. We all had a laugh over that one because most people take boogie boards out on the ocean not blow up boats. Bobby was laughing right along with us. We had the opportunity to meet a number of Jon's fellow Marines this past summer but I was particularily struck by your Bobby. I can still see him standing in his extra long, shiny basketball shorts and kidding around with our children. He had such a nice calm presence about him. He looked you right in the eye while he was talking or listening and you knew he was really interested in what you had to say. It sort of took my breath away. I remember saying to my husband, "Wow, what a great kid!" after they drove away. I had the pleasure of meeting him again a few weeks later when we drove several boys back to the base after they had spent the afternoon shopping in Oceanside (which of course included the obligatory visit to Best Buy!!). Once again I was so impressed by his courtesy and his whole demeanor. He had a true sense of himself and a wisdom beyond his years. We are so glad we got to meet your son and witness for ourselves what a wonderful young man he was. It was truly an honor. Name: Debbie Fernandez Location: Delray Beach, Fl Comments: I'm deeply sorrowful over the death of your beloved. But death was only victorious over his human body. Bobby soul and spirit is very much alive. And we who all know our Savior will get to hug Bobby and say "Thank-you." Thank-you for your honor and valor, thank-you for fighting the battles of the United States of America, and thank-you leaving the comfort and love of your family to fight this battle. You bring honor to the Marine Corps. We as Americans, as we go about our daily lives, should never forget the sacrifices being made each and every day by these honorable men and women. I will continue to pray for our military, their families, our President, and our fallen and angels. On behalf of me and my family, thank-you. Debbie Fernandez Name: Corporal Josiah Koniecki Location: Iraq Comments: One of my favorite memories of Bobby was when he got the idea to bring a large, inflateable kiddy pool into our room. I couldn't believe it! He actually wanted to set it up in our tiny room, and set aside furniture to do it! The awful thing took up the whole room! Bobby had a great sense of humor, so he bought one of those California Lifeguard T shirts to go along with it. I think he and the guys were doing it just to see if they could make me lose my marbles, because they only kept it standing upright in our room for about a day or two. They later moved it to the ground floor right beneath our balcony, and I recall the guys having swimming parties in it. Bobby was such a funny, neat guy, with a great sense of humor. I just wanted to write and let you know that I am still praying for all of you, for comfort and protection. I so wish that I could be home to be with you all right now. I miss Bobby, and can't believe he is gone. He was a good man. Name: "Rocky" Fortner Location: Chino Hills, Calif. Comments: Simple words can not express the wrenching heartache one must experience with the loss of a child. Especially given the circumstances of this particular hero. Our prayers and condolences to all the family & loved ones. Know this however, your (our) hero is in GREAT Company and stands watch over a destination many strive for. wE SHALL MEET AGAIN. Like President Reagan once said, "Some people go through their entire life wondering if they REALLY made a difference... MARINES don't have that problem". A POEM FOR A "BROTHER" Let me share with you a story bout a young man in his teens, that had dreams and plans of joining the UNited Staes Marines. . . He had taken all the pre-tests at a small recruiting store, where they told him he had qualified for infrantry and more. . . He was off to Paris Island where the sun is schorching hot, to see if he might have the grit to be what he was not. . . The days turned into weeks then months, and muscles turneed to steel, a sense of pride & honor filled his heart & mind with zeal. . . He had conquored all his dragons, he had finally see the light, he knew now what it REALLY meant to be the first to fight. . . He was lean and mean, still his teens, when he donned the "Tan & Green, he had paid the price to earn the title. . United States Marine. . . He knew that war was looming in some far off distant land, with heat and bugs and other "demons" burried in the sand. . . So he said a prayer & packed his bags, what else was there to do. . ? Like so many gone before him, he would fight for me & you. . . The sweat & blood, the loneliness, were often hard to bare, a buddy lost within the ranks, the "1000 meter stare". . . But the kindred spirit of the Corps and all those that he knew, would help to keep him focused on the job he had to do. . . He has stepped into a BROTHERHOOD that few have ever seen, and wore the Anchor, Globe & Eagle of a United States Marine. . . Rest in peace my BROTHER, SEMPER FI, "Rocky", CORPORAL, USMC/Vietnam- 1963-67 Name: Kathleen Taylor Location: New Jersey Comments: I am moved beyond belief and grieve for your loss. Please know that we are very proud of your husband/son's service and sacrifice for our country. My husband, SSGT William S. Dickerson, of the Indiana National Guard, was just recently deployed and will be fighting in Iraq very soon for the same cause that Bobby did. My husband also served proudly in the United States Navy for 9 1/2 years. My husband will be gone for 18 months, but even in my sadness and loneliness, my heart aches for your family. Our five children could not be more proud of their Daddy, even though they miss him terribly already! He's protecting our freedom and giving another country a chance to have a free life like the United States of America. Little "Payton" will forever be proud of her daddy!! God Bless you and that precious little girl. She will bring a renewed sense of meaning to your life. Thank you so much for the most beautiful tribute that I have ever seen! Stay proud of Bobby and remember that God loves you and will keep blessing you. In Christ, Robyn Dickerson (proud soldier's wife) Name: GySgt Timothy Gerdes Location: Cherry Point, NC Comments: Hello, My name is GySgt Timothy Gerdes and am an active duty GySgt with the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing located at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, NC. I was given a link the other day to Cpl Warns video tribute and was moved beyond mention. I am getting ready to go back to Iraq in a couple of weeks myself and have approximately 50 young Marines that I am taking with me and will be responsible for. I am the Intelligence Operations Chief for my unit and while I have been deployed several times prior to this, for many of my young Marines this will be their first deployment. Cpl Warns video so impressed me that I showed it to all my Marines to help them understand the importance of their jobs and the seriousness of what we are getting ready to go do (for many Marines that have never deployed they have a hard time understanding that this is a very serious endeavor that they are about to undertake). As I expected the video had a very profound affect on my Marines as it had on me. I write all this to you to say first and foremost thank you for Cpl Warns and all my honor and respect to both you and his memory....he was and remains a hero to all Americans. Secondly, through this video there are a bunch of young Marines that I believe will take their job a little more serious and will do everything within their power to ensure they do all they can to protect our Marines in harms ways with the best intelligence support they can provide. Again thank you for your site, for Cpl Warns and may you know that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. God Bless your family and may He continue to hold Cpl Warns in the palm of his hand.
