It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the loss of your son. Please accept my sincere condolences on his passing. I know how painful it is to lose someone of the finest caliber as your son.

I served 26 years in the Marine Corps, and 18 months of that was in the infantry in Viet Nam. As one who walked in your son's shoes many decades before, I know how much your son cared for his Marines, and how much they loved and respected him.

The one thing you learn in combat is the reality that you are just a memory. So you strive so hard to leave as many good memories behind as you can. This is only accomplished through acts of courage and compassion. It is obvious your "Beloved Son" was very good at this by the warm memories of his fellow Marines and your family.

The Marine Corps is a group of men and women who put the ideals of the Corps first and themselves second. One of these ideals is FORTITUDE - The strength to persist, and the courage to endure. I know your family is going through this at this time, but remember you are not alone, every Marine is with you during this time of challenge.

Thank you for letting me write this message to you, and know my prayers are with you. As my Drill Instructor told me over forty years ago,"you are mortal and therefore you can die, but as long as there is a United States Marine Corps your are immortal, because Marines never forget those who went before." Bobby lives in the heart of all of us who have worn the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

Comments: Just thought I would share one more comment:

I was working at one of my jobs this weekend at a bar when a group of Marines came in. They were all so excited to be Marines, sharing stories, and yelling out an occasional "OOrah" every now and then. I remembered seeing one of them in there before, from his Military I.D., and got to talking to him. He asked me if I knew anyone in the Military and I spoke of those I did Bobby, and his recent passing. His jaw dropped. His reaction was "No way, BOBBY WARNS?!? I went to Boot camp with him! He was such an awesome guy. I'm so very sorry to hear about that." A couple other Marines came up behind him and were all about to drink a shot. The gentleman I was speaking to rose his glass and toasted "This one's for Bobby Warns, a true hero and one helluva guy. May you rest in peace, brother." The other guys followed with another "OOrah" and took the shot.

Yet again, one more person (among so many) who Bobby made an impact on in his life. I've been reading all the comments people have left and it's so heartwarming to see all those who have left messages- whether they knew Bobby or not. Bobby has left a piece of himself with people all over the nation. Thanks to the video/tributes, there is that many more people who got the chance to see what a fine man he was. He will forever be remembered for his smile, his spirit, his strength and courage, and for the ultimate sacrifice he made for us all.

I am a firefighter and responded to New York after the terrorist bombings as part of FEMA's Urban Search and Rescue Task Force. Knowing 343 of my fellow firefighters died there trying to save lives gave me great pause as I knew the United States Marine Corps would soon be at the doorstep of Saddam and other terrorists. What I also knew is that wonderful young men like Bobby would probably die trying to save lives too. Words can not express the sorrow I feel for you and your loss. I am a SSgt stationed in Okinawa Japan now but I was with the 1ST Marine Div for the begining of the war. I went through alot over there, seeing alot of bad things happen and going through some trials and tribulations. As a leader of Marines like your son was, I was scared to death that I might fail my Marines and even more scared that they might die or get injured. I prayed alot over there and asked God to give me strength and the knowledge to do what was best for my Marines. I also prayed that if anyone had to die or get wounded that it would be me and not them. I was first wounded on 18 April 2002 by a RPG round and it was extreemly minor. I hid my wounds from everyone I could because I was afraid that I might be sent to the rear. So I duct taped my gashes and scrapes. I did not want to leave my Marines because I felt responsible for anything that might happen to them. Unfortunately two days later I was hit by sniper fire with wounds that could not be hidden. I begged to stay in Bagdad but was denied and I was sent stateside. I believed in what we were doing and I was ready to die for my Marines or my country. As your son was a Corporal, a leader of leaders, I can only suspect he felt the same way. Nobody wants to die but we all knew it could happen. Your son was a honorable man who stood for all that is good in this country. He wanted to be the best and being a Marine was the best anyone can do. I am sure you know that he wanted to come home safe and sound and he tried to. But as Marines we know there are bigger things in life than what we want. Your son is a Hero and I have no doubt that for generations in your family the story of Bobby will be told on how his sacrifice was for the betterment of man kind and his unselfish devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself, his family, friends, and Corps.

Your video celebrating the life of your son was one of the most moving tributes to a fallen Marine I have ever seen.

I am a 21 year old corporal in the USMC Reserve in Eugene, Oregon. I go to the University of Oregon and am only 26 credits away from graduating, but for the second time, my unit has been call to serve in Iraq. I did not go the first time due to and officer's training program I was enrolled in at the time, but I will be there this round.

I am sorry beyond words for your loss, but I can assure you, the young men of this country will continue to serve. Not for medals, not for glory, and not for America itself. We will continue to serve due to men like your son who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will continue where he left off and finish the job he so willingly contributed to.

As I prepare to leave this January, I find myself reflecting on things like danger, loneliness, and fear, but seeing so many go before me gives me the courage to do so also.

I will keep your family in my prayers and will be sending Bobby's video to every person I can think of to see the courage and sacrifice of such a fine young man.

I was in 'Nam for 4 tours. I saw my owm brother come to 'Nam and had to leave a tour early to bury him.

There is no way I could possibly express my understanding of the loss of a loved one or even more, a child.

The only thing I can say at this point is "Semper Fi Brother" and I am really sorry for your loss.

War is not really the worst thing in life, there are many other things that are worse. Being on the 100th floor of the world trade center on 9/11, going to college in Israle and getting a cup of coffee-as a bomber decides now is the time. To be doing what you were trained for and going out with some fight in you, then you - even if for a short -died doing what you wanted to be doing.

(Once a Marine - alwayas a Marine. And yes, I Have more purple hearts than John Kerry.) You will be sadly missed by your unit and will live on in the memorys of all lifes that you have touched.

Comments: My son is a United States Marine Reservist scheduled for deployment to Iraq in February. He will be leaving home on January 6th for training at 29 Palms prior to deployment. As you might imagine, it was very difficult to watch the video of your beautiful son's funeral. I knew it would be. It took a while to download the video and as I sat there, I debated about cancelling the transmission and saving myself what I knew would be a heart-wrenching experience. I'm glad I waited and then viewed the entire video. What a terrific kid and such a hugh loss for your family. Thanks for sharing your grief and your obvious pride. Too few know the full depth of the price that is paid.

When my son was born in 1982, I never imagined I would one day send him off to fight in a war. My one consolation is knowing that he understands the risk - and the rewards - and that he is proud to fight for freedom.
